About me

My name is Joshua, and I'm a vegan, weightlifting quilter in North Carolina. I've been quilting since 2020, though I first dabbled in sewing as a young boy, making small quilts and garments for my plushies. I really have no business calling them garments — they were dreadful, but they had heart.

That heart never left. It just found bigger fabric.

The rest of my story is below. Also, view a list of some of my accomplishments highlighted here.

A portrait of a person sitting on a park bench outside with a quilt casually resting to them. The quilt is modern with black circles and four-pointed stars in colors of brown and blues hues. In the background is a dome of a space observatory.

Quilting, for me, is a deep conversation. It's how I honor the people and moments that shape me, how I navigate both grief and joy, and how I make space for those feelings and stories. That's the thread running through everything you'll find here, and it's also what Lifting and Stitching is really about. Both the barbell and the sewing machine demand the same things: patience, repetition and the slow revelation of something stronger than what you started with.

Today, I'm a modern and art quilter drawn to color, shape and story. Most of my inspiration isn't found on Earth. It often begins with a spark from the cosmos: stars, planets and the awe of space. I'll spend months with a telescope image before I ever touch fabric, sketching and rethinking until the design feels inevitable. From there, ideas evolve into fabric, often drawn from a single image or a constellation of two or three influences that define structure, objects and depth.

Exploring a variety of piecing techniques from gentle curves to traditional blocks keeps my imagination in motion. My earlier work followed others' patterns, but I soon found myself eager to bring my own imaginings to life in cotton. My quilts often blend structure, symmetry and a dash of spontaneity.

Outside of quilting, my background wanders a bit: television and cinema, a career in communications and a library science degree. At home, my spouse and I have been graciously permitted to share space with our beloved cat, Pumpkin. I love working out at the gym or cooking a plant-based meal. You may find me writing, reading, spiraling down a family history rabbit hole or wandering through the mountains of western North Carolina.

Welcome to my quiltiverse. I'm glad you're here.
